FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions Page 2
How do I know if my child is an appropriate candidate for this project?
Specialized Housing, as part of their management contract, conducts an application process that begins with a simple application form provided by Specialized Housing. The application is submitted with a $300 fee. SHI staff contacts teachers, therapists, and physicians for current information about the applicant. More importantly, SHI staff meets the applicant in social settings, both alone and with other current or potential residents, to gauge their willingness and ability to live in a communal setting and to engage with the community in which they live.
What staff support is provided for the residents?
A house manager is on site during weekdays from 2:00 pm – 10:00 pm. Staff is always on call for emergency purposes. The house manager supervises a team of part-time, weekend, and live-in staff. The House Manager works directly with residents around their daily living skills, including housekeeping, budgeting, socializing, and personal hygiene. The House Manager also oversees medical appointments and the distribution of medications.
Two apartments are set aside for live-in staff. Each live-in staff person has a private apartment within the house and is available in an overnight emergency and for early morning supervision. Together with part time weekend staff, they provide supports that include cooking, activities, shopping and food preparation.
What services are provided to residents in SHI home:
What is expected of each resident?
Residents are expected to develop independent living skills to the extent of their ability. This includes maintaining their individual living space, personal laundry, money management, sharing in household duties, such as meal planning, food preparation, food shopping, meal clean up, trash removal.
Each resident is expected to access outside supports such as case management and employment services, medical care and transportation services. Staff facilitates meetings to ensure that the needs of residents are met.
In addition, each residence has a clinical supervisor who serves as a consultant to the house manager. This supervisor is available as a consultant and liaison to families to discuss privately any issues they may have and meets weekly with residents as a group without the house manager or other staff.
